Martel DenHartog

I am the lab manager for Jo Handelsman’s lab and Tiny Earth Chemistry Hub (TECH) in the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery. Tiny Earth is a global network of students discovering antibiotics from soil, and my role is to liase between the network of students and instructors and the continued drug discovery pipeline at TECH. I started as a research intern at WID in 2019 and have since moved into management and coordinator roles. Being a part of the Lab Manager CoP has helped me find resources on campus and contacts across departments as a new member of the University. I am also a graduate student in Life Sciences Communication where I study risk perceptions of antibiotic resistance and strategies for overcoming science-related communication barriers in various audiences. In my free time, I run, bike, plan birthday surprises for my lab mates, and overanalyze my home decor.
